How are Floods Formed?

Floods can be formed in many different ways. Floods are formed when big waves are rolled on dry land. Rain can also cause floods when it rains more than the land can handle in a short amount of time. This happens when there are storms, especially tropical storms. Floods can be caused when snow melts too quickly or when dams break. Tsunamis and hurricanes can also cause floods. e.g. On the 28 of February 2010, a tsunami hit Japan and after  that there was a flood. 

Types of Floods 

There are many different types of floods. 

Flash Floods

One type of flood is called a flash flood. A flash flood is a flood that can happen within minutes or even HOURS! Flash floods can happen during the heavy rainfalls of tropical storms.

River Floods

Another type of flood is called a river flood. A river flood happens when rivers overflow or when there are winter or spring rains.

Coastal Floods

The last type of flood is called a coastal flood. A coastal flood is a flood that happens along coastal areas. They are created by giant tidal waves or tsunamis caused by under sea volcanoes or earthquakes.

Effects on People and Land 

Floods can effect many people and land. Floods can damage buildings, cars and ruin homes and businesses. They can also loose personal belongings and it can cost a lot of money. Floods can kill people and can also cause diseases. A good result from floods is they bring rich soil that helps farmers grow crops.
